Rare art tile from 1943, called The Seven Virgins, by renowned Swedish artist Lalla Karin Reuterborg, born 1915 on Lidinö outside of Stockholm. (She died in 1995.) She founded her workshop, Lalla Cheramics, in 1942 and created ceramic art most frequently in this style: white background with figures painted on. The Seven Virgins is a grim story from the Bible, with the lady martyrs losing their lives (and limbs) when they refused to give up their faith. It's possible this reference had more modern meaning when created, given the circumstances unfolding in Europe in 1943. This tile is a treasured rarity for anyone who collects European art tiles or collectors who hunt and gather Bible-related art. Markings on verso along with a small original piece of explanatory paper.
