Beautiful and skillfully crafted vintage art crystal ashtray, well-kept, and in excellent used condition (EUC). Maker: Hoya Crystal*Made in: JapanPattern: Glacier IceCollection: Hoya Crystal Art & Design CollectionDescription: Round shape, irregular polished thick rim, all-over glacier/ice design around exterior base bowl; interior is smooth and polished.Circa: 1980sProduction methods: Hoya combined the ancient mouth-blown and hand-formed glassmaking methods with uniquely designed technical innovations for glass forming and finishing. Its manner of polishing individual pieces preserves their crisp lines and mirror finish. The pieces might be engraved by diamond-wheel, sandblasted, or hand cut.*Hoya (Hoya, Japan) began in 1941 as an optical glass company by two brothers, Shoichi and Shigeru Yamanaka. The brothers began creating high end crystal in 1945 in addition to their high specification technical glass products. A staff of 15 designers contributed to the designs manufactured by Hoya Art Glass and Crystal, inspired by traditional Japanese arts, nature and landscapes. The company's style was noted for its clean, architectural lines. Hoya crystal reached the US art glass market when Alice Chappell proposed marketing the glass here in the states and opened a opened a showroom on Park Avenue in New York City. Ms. Chappell had extensive glass experience, having been a vice president for marketing at Steuben Glass. She became intrigued with Hoya after seeing pieces in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in Corning. According to a 1986 article in the Christian Science Monitor, prices ranged from $15 for a goblet to $30,000 for an art piece. Most pieces were priced in the $300-500 range.
